TL;DR: When the app connects to the COM-DEX neckloop, you can use your phone as a basic remote control. Often, though, the phone will acknowledgement the Bluetooth connection but the app won’t.
LONGER:
I’ve read the reviews from a year ago and I understand the frustration. But the app has been updated and has significantly improved since then.
Allow me to elaborate:
I use this app in lieu of the dedicated remote (RC-Dex). It is a bit more clumsy than using the dedicated remote but I haven’t lost my cell phone in over 10 years. I lost my RC-Dex after a year. It works for that. In order for it to work in this capacity, the Com-Dex loop has to be closed and the device must not be streaming anything. Then you can make the adjustments. If you don’t want the Com-Dex on, you can open the loop and the chosen program will stay with the hearing aids. If you want to go back to the master program, open and close the aids.
In addition to its functionality as a remote on an iPhone, it serves to show how much battery charge remains in the Com-Dex. Again, the Com-Dex needs to be connected for the app to tell you anything.
That’s it. The Bluetooth connection isn’t perfect, but is as reliable as a Bluetooth speaker or similar device.
Seeing the whole scale from quiet to loud would be great, but not something included in the regular RC-Dex, so I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.
The directionality, if it works, would be great, but I wonder how much I’ll notice it. So far, I haven’t.
One word of advice for those experiencing excessive drops: the strength of the hearing aid battery makes a difference. Try a fresh battery or two and see if that makes a difference. It has for me.
So the app is fine. The Com-Dex is nifty because it enables me to hear phone calls corrected for my hearing loss and listen to Bluetooth connected devices without bothering those around me.
Amusing aside: We still use headset wires or strange things coming out of our ears as cues that someone is talking on the phone or streaming audio. The fact that my hearing aids are virtually invisible and the Com-Dex is fairly discreet sometimes gets me odd looks if I’m on the phone or streaming audio from my phone.
